Marathon 75 – Vol 9
LP (Item 602747) Andrew's Music, 1975 — Condition: New Copy
Incredible work from one of the unsung geniuses of American jazz – the great saxophonist Andrew White, an amazingly soulful talent with a really deep range of expression! This amazing package documents most of a 12 hour "marathon" played by White in the mid 70s – a concert that ran for 12 hours in length – during which Andrew never fails to amaze – stretching out in these bold, righteous lines that are clearly inspired by Coltrane – yet taken into other directions too – with bits of funk, spiritual, and other strands of jazz folded effortlessly into the mix! The tone is incredible throughout – and the quartet swings hard – even though some of the members had to switch from the earlier part of the marathon – as White needed "fresh horses" to keep up with his pace! The quartet still features work from the mighty Steve Novosel on bass (who you may know from Lloyd McNeil albums – Lloyd recorded the date, by the way!) – plus Kevin Toney on piano and Keith Killgo on drums – both on loan from The Blackbyrds! Titles include "Night Dreamer", "Theme For Ernie", "Moment's Notice", and "Theme Grand". (Original pressing!) © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
