Although Captain Sky was pretty much just a proto-P-Funk wannabe on most of his records, this one's actually a pretty decent batch of grooves – and it includes the excellent "Super Sporm", a killer extended track with a great conga break, and a tight old school sample sound! Also features "Saturday Night Move-Ease", 'Dr Rock", "Wonder Worm" and "Can't Stop Now". (Cover has a cutout hole & a note in pen.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

T-Motion & Group
AVI, 1981. Very Good+
T-Motion is Eddie Thomas – who sings vocals on all tracks, and also handles arrangements and production. The overall sound is sort of an 80s groove at the best moments – although the songwriting's not that strong in most parts. There's only three tracks total on the album – and ... Cocomotion
AVI, 1977. Very Good
One of the many projects handled by AVI's Rinder & Lewis team – a jazz-inflected, keyboard-heavy duo that should be getting wider recognition with the club kids today! Side one of the album features an extended 2-parter of the great groover "Cocomotion" – done here with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wish It Would Rain
Gordy, 1968. Very Good
An excellent album by the Temps – one that shows the group digging a bit deeper for a harder soul sound, working in a mode that would soon explode into the heavier numbers that would transform their sound completely. Norman Whitfield had a big part in this – as he's the producer of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lonely Teardrops
Brunswick, 1959. Very Good-
Jackie Wilson's second album, where he really moves into hit-bound territory – kicking off with the sublime crossover classic "Lonely Teardrops", a tune that burns equally on rock, soul, and R&B fronts – then rolls into a batch of jaunty little numbers that really showcase ... Black Rock
Volt, 1971. Very Good
An album that's every bit as great as the title might imply – heavy guitar-based funk from the second version of The Bar-Kays – one that uses the new instrumental focus to push a groove that's much more black rock than before! There's still a bit of trumpet from the past, but the sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Solid
United Artists, 1975. Very Good
A tasty set from Mandrill – one of their first records away from the Polydor label, but every bit as great as later efforts for that company, especially Mandrilland. The overall sound is a bit smoother than some of their full-out funky albums – but in a way that really helps blend ... LP, Vinyl record album

Get Up With It
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Miles Davis' last studio session before a few years of seclusion – and a really monumental effort, probably the baddest of the electric period! The album does a great job of capturing the energy of the frenzied live sets from that time, and matching it with Teo Macero's cut and paste editing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Arista/Freedom, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Excellent Artista/Freedom reissue that brings together the full set from Cecil's 1962 performance at Cafe Monmartre. He's playing here in a trio that has Jimmy Lyons on alto and Sonny Murray on drums, and the music's a key link between his later seventies stuff, and his earlier work that you can ...
