CD (Item 611529) Polskie Nagrania (Poland), Mid 60s — Condition: New Copy

Seminal sounds from the legendary Krzysztof Komeda – a series of live recordings done at Poland's Jazz Jamboree Festival – an East European annual event that was arguably as important to jazz as western fests at Newport and Montreux! Given that Komeda's on his home turf here, he seems to be bringing out some extra-special qualities in his music – sounds that are even more striking than his crucial studio recordings of the 60s – and which feature work from some of his most important contemporaries on the scene, helping him spur the music onto new heights! The first CD in the set is a bit more straight ahead – a great look at Komeda's roots, although still with modern touches – and the other two CDs feature some great long takes of Komeda's beautiful compositions – played with great depth on the solos. In addition to Komeda's piano, the set also features Rune Carlsson or Czeslaw Bartkowski on drums, Michal Urbaniak on tenor and soprano sax, Tomasz Stanko on trumpet, and Jerzy Milian on vibes. Booklet features notes in Polish and English – and the remastering is great – arguably even better than the rare albums these tunes originally appeared on. Titles include "Crazy Girl", "Ballad Etude 1", "An Oscar For Treadwell", "My Ballad", "Alea", "Sophia's Tune", "Svantetic", "Kattorna", and "Nighttime Daytime Requiem".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
