Open Fire Two Guitars

CD (Item 472002) Columbia, 1958 — Condition: New Copy

Sublime early work from Johnny Mathis – a session that really shows the jazzy charm he had at the start! The setting is as spare as you might guess from the title – no large orchestra, and instead just two guitars (played by Tony Mottola and Al Caiola) supporting Johnny's vocals in a very open-ended sort of way! Mathis' approach to the session is amazing – really stretching out with the lack of traditional structure, and really working those amazing tones and phrasings at a level that he would hardly ever match again on record. Titles include "Please Be Kind", "Embraceable You", "Open Fire", "Bye Bye Blackbird", "You'll Never Know", and "I'm Just A Boy In Love".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
