Ray Stephen Oche & His Matumbo – Interpretation Of The Original Rhythm

LP (Item 589554) Disques D'Esperance/Favorite (France), 1977 — Condition: New Copy

An amazing bit of African-tinged jazz – recorded in the Paris scene of the 70s, and easily one of the strongest records to come from that scene at the time! There's definitely an Afro Funk vibe going on here – but there's also a fair bit of straight funky jazz as well – played sharply and with a hell of a lot of force, by a group led by trumpeter and percussionist Ray Stephen Oche – and also featuring tenor, piano, percussion, and some especially great Fender bass – which really keeps the whole thing rolling along nicely! Oche's trumpet solos are bold and righteous – and really stretch out nicely – and the record also features some wicked ensemble vocals too. Titles include "Okwukwu - Kiwongo", "Daybreak On The Niger", "Odeiyolaoo", "Alaglanu-Alaglano", and "Botalaboyoka".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
