Bits of jazz and bits of soul, perfectly folded together with a raspy brilliance that really grabs our attention – a subtle depth of singing that almost takes us back to Nina Simone at times, but which also has some leaner 21s Century styles that are mighty nice too! Malia's vocals alone are plenty great – but the album's also got these great gentle instrumentations – bits of vibes, organ, guitar, and drums – used in simple ways that almost have a Brownswood Recordings sort of vibe – as if this record were a female equivalent to Jose James' great work for that label! Titles include loads of Nina Simone numbers – and tracks include "Four Women", "If You Go Away", "Don't Explain", "Baltimore", "Feeling Good", "Wild Is The Wind", and "Marriage Is For Old Folks".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

One of the coolest vocal groups of the late 60s – Germany's Gunter Kallmann Choir, presented here in a batch of tracks that includes some of their hippest tracks from the Polydor years! The group's sound is quite similar to that of the Horst Jankowski singers – a large ensemble of ... CD

Don't Let Go
MCA/Blue Thumb (Japan), 1974. New Copy
Tight funky jazz from vocalist Ben Sidran – still very much in his best early mode, and playing with a really raw sound overall! Ben's vocals are in that down-home Mose Allison mode, but the real charm is the music – which features funky drums by Clyde Stubblefield, the man responsible ... CD

Gone/Warner (Japan), 1958. New Copy
A really unusual later album from Cab Calloway – a set recorded for the mostly R&B label Gone, and done in a style that update the Calloway sound from previous years at the Cotton Club! The overall presentation is strongly jazz-based – with arrangements by Eddie Barefield, who also ... CD

Jo & Jazz
Columbia (Japan), 1960. New Copy
They certainly got the title right on this one – as Jo's singing a great batch of jazz-based tracks – and getting help from an array of small group players that include Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Conte Candoli, and Ray Nance! Arrangements are by Johnny Mandel, in a warmly chromatic ... CD

Soul Factor
Via Veneto (Italy), 2014. New Copy
A great collaboration between Italian vocalist Cristina Zavalloni and mighty keyboardist Uri Caine – a set that's surprisingly soulful overall, and one of Uri's funkiest records to date! The style is more soul than jazz – and Zavalloni works well as an old school styled singer, with ... CD

One of Blossom Dearie's hippest albums – done in that lightly grooving style that makes her 60s work some of our favorite! The style is groovier than Dearie's already-great work on Verve – a bit in the mode of her Capitol Recordings, and some of her British 60s gems from overseas ... CD

Savant, 2014. New Copy
A great old school vocal jazz set from Barbara Morrison – done with small combo backing from tenorist Houston Person – in a mode that's similar to his classic records with Etta Jones! Morrison's a singer we've always liked, but it often depends on the setting – and this time ... CD

We've loved Carmen Lundy since the very first time we heard her voice – and that love has only continued to grow over the decades, as she's given us a tremendous run of great records and wonderful music! This time around, Lundy's still strongly in the jazz side of the spectrum, but also ... CD

Wicked guitar work from U-Nam – a contemporary musician, but one who's drank deeply of the best vintage modes from CTI and Kudu Records – and who is one of the few who can really get such a classic sound just right! This album's got all the sharp edges of a 70s funky fusion set by ... CD
