A lost classic from reedman Joe Harriott – and a landmark blending of jazz and world music! The core of the group is that quintet of West Indian alto player Joe Harriott – one of the leading lights of the British jazz scene of the 60s, and a dedicated modernist who was as important to England as Ornette Coleman was to America. Harriott's group is expanded by the addition of John Mayer's quintet of Indian musicians, who play in tandem with Harriott's group in a swirling blend of styles and sounds. The sound is spacey and trippy, with more elements of Indian music, than of jazz, but Harriott still manages to get some nice playing in. The whole album is one long suite of tracks, and titles include "Contrasts", "Raga Megha", and "Raga Gaud-Saranga". (Blue & green label pressing. Cover has light wear, some light stains, a bit of seam splitting, and some pen.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint-
Mindblowing electric work from the great Eddie Harris – heard here on his famous late 60s combo that also features bass from the great Melvin Jackson! The music's got all the soulful currents of Eddie's earlier work, yet also takes on a trippier vibe too – since Harris plays an ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good
A genius album from David Newman – and a record that follows strongly in the mode of the excellent Bigger & Better set! Newman's playing here with a really far-reaching groove that's miles ahead of his initial work for Atlantic – really stretching out at the end of the 60s, in an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint-
One of the few American albums issued by this Dutch funky flautist who cut more than his share of heavy discs on the other side of the Atlantic. Hinze was part of the lowland funk scene that included John Lee & Gerry Brown (both of whom are on this record), and his music shares a similar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Groove Merchant, Early 70s. Very Good
Some great down-home work from Jimmy McGriff – a session that's a bit less funk-based than some of his others for the Groove Merchant label, but still plenty darn great! The set's kind of a nice link between the straighter soul jazz of McGriff's 60s years, and his return to the format at the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bossa Nova
Argo, 1962. Very Good-
One of the most unique albums from Ramsey Lewis' early years at Chess Records – a spare set of bossa groovers that has the Lewis trio with Eldee Young and Redd Holt augmented by added Brazilian percussion and guitar! The sound is spare, sharp, and soulful – and the record's one of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
