The start of funky funky Herbie Hancock! This album's the first to feature Herbie really breaking away from his straight jazz work – moving into a groove that's nice and funky, using electric piano along with acoustic, to forge the sound that he'd develop famously over the 70s. The album's got a harder, heavier sound than some of his straight electric ones – and it features a larger group with soloists that include Johnny Coles on trumpet and Joe Henderson on tenor – plus some sweet basslines from Buster Williams – all led by Herbie into a tight soul jazz flurry of excellent tracks! Includes the cuts "Fat Mama" and "Wiggle Waggle", both sample favorites, plus "Tell Me A Bedtime Story" and "Lil Brother". Classic stuff, and one of his best records ever!  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Mr Hands
Sony (Japan), 1980. New Copy
Herbie Hancock really earns his name in the title on this set – as he stretches out on a host of cool keyboards – all with a spacious, open style that's mighty nice! There's a gentle groove to the record, but still some of the more open qualities of Herbie's wilder electric records of ... CD

Drums Unlimited
Atlantic, 1966. New Copy
The drums are certainly unlimited here – and the album's a really unique one, in that it shows Max Roach in 2 different settings – one with a group, and one that's simply solo! One batch of tracks has Max in the company of a tight group of soul jazz players like Freddie Hubbard, Roland ... CD

The rarest of all of Art Blakey's percussion group projects – and quite possibly the best, too! The session features Blakey at the head of a strong mix of jazz and percussion players – with Art Taylor and Philly Joe Jones on the regular drum kit, Donald Byrd on trumpet and Ray Bryant ... CD

A real killer from vibesman Mike Mainieri – a set that's got a darker edge than some of his previous work, while still hanging onto all the warm touches of his own instrument in the lead! Backings are full, but never uptight – and there's a loosness to the record that really works well ... CD

Joyous Lake
Warner (Japan), 1976. New Copy
A mid-70s classic from guitarist Pat Martino – a tightly jamming set that features Pat on synthesizer as well as guitar – working alongside keyboardist Delmar Brown, and some very heavy rhythms from bassist Mark Leonard and drummer Kenwood Dennard! The sound is often in that jamming ... CD

A really unique little chapter in the career of Shorty Rogers – and a near-lost record that's one of his best from the 60s! As you might guess from the title, the set was recorded as a sort of "stereo dynamics" album – post-bachelor pad, but in a mode that was very concerned ... CD
