A simple but effective session from Bobby Hutcherson – one that comes across with a really subtle brilliance! The tracks are all standards, performed by Hutcherson with a quartet that includes George Cables on acoustic piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all working with Bobby in a style that allows a lot of open space between the notes, an approach that's especially nice in the interplay between piano and vibes on the set. Titles include "Star Eyes", "If I Were A Bell", "Summertime", "Autumn Leaves", and "All Of You".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sermon!
Blue Note, Early 60s. Very Good+
One of the Jimmy Smith "jam session" Blue Notes, with a large group that includes Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, George Coleman, Tina Brooks, and Art Blakey – nearly all of whom take long solos and dig deep to compete with each other. 3 long tracks, "The Sermon", "JOS&quo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Offramp
ECM, 1982. Very Good+
A really wonderful little record from Pat Metheny – quite possibly our favorite by the man, thanks to some really inventive sounds that still resonate strongly in the groove scene today! Pat's skirting nicely here between the sound-based quality of earlier records, and some of the more fluid ... LP, Vinyl record album

Samba Para Dos
Verve, Early 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A great lost groover on Verve – recorded during the heyday of the label's bossa years with Stan Getz! The record features Bob Brookmeyer fronting a large group arranged and conducted by Lalo Schifrin – soloing over the top, while Lalo comes up with sparkling bossa-tinged grooves that ... Atlantic, 1964. Very Good+
An extremely haunting version of the score to Porgy & Bess – recorded by the Modern Jazz Quartet at the height of their powers, in a gently soulful version that really takes off from the original. Soul Song
Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint-
A nice one by Shirley – with more of a funk groove than earlier work, and a little bit more of a soul jazz sound than some of her Prestige albums. The record features Eric Gale playing some nice guitar, plus Stanley Turrentine blowing tenor on a number of cuts, and Shirley on organ, and even ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cotique, 1968. Sealed
Good people, these Latin Teens – a very cool group that was young enough to not worry about names or labels, and who jammed in the best open-ended style of the time! As their name might imply, the group was mostly made up of kids – and as such, they had kind of a freewheeling approach ... LP, Vinyl record album

House Of Music
Mirage/Atlantic, 1980. Near Mint-
Livin' the "Bon Bon Vie", with this classic uptempo groover from T.S. Monk! You'd hardly guess that this guy was Thelonious Monk's son – but who cares about his roots when the album grooves so hard? This Monk plays drums, not piano, but the best tracks on the record have a tight ... LP, Vinyl record album
