Legendary work from Miles Davis – large group sessions that virtually define the "cool" in cool jazz! The work's quite different from Davis' earlier bop sides with Charlie Parker – and show a distinct influence from modernists like Gerry Mulligan (who is on the recordings) and from the experiments of the Tristano school. Miles is less the leader than the creative visionary – as all players come together in a perfect blend of sound, perfectly polished, and with a very dark edge. Titles include "Jeru", "Move", "Venus De Milo", "Budo", and "Deception". This 70s repackaging bills itself as the complete sessions, but adds only one more track, the standard "Darn That Dream", and has a different cover image than the original LP.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Decoy
Columbia, 1984. Very Good+ Gatefold
The decoy here might be in the rhythms, which are often electric, but still played live – handled by Robert Irving III on many tracks, with a cool 80s fusion sound that's mighty nice! The style of the album's a nice change from the Miles groove of the 70s – a bit leaner, with almost a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Haze
Prestige, 1954. Near Mint-
An early full-length album issued under Miles Davis' name – one that brings together some earlier 10" and single recordings for Prestige! Miles Ahead
Columbia, 1957. Very Good
A masterful meeting of 2 50s modern jazz talents – the trumpet of Miles Davis balanced with the arrangements of Gil Evans – with results that have made the album one of Miles' greatest ever! Jazz Track
Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good-
Although not actually a proper album – this is still one of the greatest Miles Davis albums of all time! Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good-
A great lost chapter in the Cannonball/David Axelrod story! The record features Cannon's classic quintet performing some longer, more serious works with orchestral backing – and the sound is vaguely similar to some of Axelrod's "high concept" work for Capitol. A bit funky, a bit progressive – and a choppy fusion session led by reed player Clive Stevens, who uses electric and acoustic tenor, and soprano sax on the session. One of the rarest of Howard's excellent sides for Capitol in the 60s – and one of the grooviest too! The format here is a bit different than the others – in that some larger arrangements are added to the core group in the set – making for some added horn flourishes that dip in ... Late Kenton on Capitol – but great Kenton too! In a way, Stan was almost best when he was working with standards – as on a set like this, he has an incredible way of transforming the sound of familiar numbers into something dark, moody, and modern. It's amazing to hear the way he ... LP, Vinyl record album
