There's a lot more funk here than you might guess from the "highlife" in the group's name – a heady blend of hevy horns and guitars, driven by lots of percussion from Ahmadu Jarr! Given the 1991 date of the recording, we're almost tempted to think of the record as being late in the initial wave of Afro Funk, rather than a later revival – even though Jarr's working here with a host of younger Swedish players in the mix – although players, we should add, who really help open up the sound – a lot like the ways that Afro Funk has transformed recently, as it's shown up on other global scenes! The record has vocals, but lots of long instrumental parts too – and titles include "Ade Jobi", "Ayisa", "Soweto", "Fullaymatu", "Swedish Weather", "Kera", and "Aminatu". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
