A great non-Stax album from Memphis soul singer Shirley Brown – recorded for Arista, but with all the depth and feeling of her indie work! Shirley's wonderfully teamed here with songwriter Bettye Crutcher –one of the best second generation talents at Stax, and writer with a great way of putting over a mature, modern southern soul tune. In addition to contributing most of the tracks, Crutcher also co-produced the record – and helps give it a sound that's hip and focused – without any overdone southern soul cliches. The set's the kind that should have made Brown as big as Millie Jackson in the 70s – and it's filled with great tracks that include "Blessed Is The Woman (With A Man Like Mine)", "When You Really Love Somebody", "Givin' Up", "Midnight Rendezvous", "A Mighty Good Feeling", and "Long On Lovin". (Cover has cutout notch and light wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

For The Real Feeling
Stax, 1979. Very Good+
A very, very nice album by Shirley that often gets overlooked next to her Woman To Woman album from the early 70s. This one's a sweet modern soul release, although it's still got Stax production by David Porter, and vocals by Shirley in her deep rich style. The groove is very nice, and the ... Nothing Can Stop Us
Arista/Rush, 1989. Near Mint-
Equal parts soul and hip hop – and a record that might be more New Jack than anything else, if it wasn't for production by Davy D and Jam Master Jay! The vocals are a bit poppy and silly at times, but the overall groove isn't that bad, especially considering other efforts like this of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marc Hannibal
Philips, Late 60s. Very Good+
A lesser-known pop soul release from the late 60s, by this former member of the Harlem Globetrotters! Marc's not much of a singer – but he does have a deep voice that's a good fit for the arrangements on the album. Jimmy Bowen produced, and there's a lot of his sweetly swinging 60s pop ... A great Johnny Guitar Watson side project – a set not billed directly to his name on the front, but which has all the great hallmarks of the best Watson albums from the 70s! Johnny produced, wrote songs, played, and sung on the record – but there's also an equal focus on his backing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Once Upon A Jukebox
H&L, 1976. Very Good+
The Stylistics pay homage to some of the great vocal classics that came before them – in this set of smooth harmony soul arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. The band's vocals are still top-shelf at this point, even though the overall concept lacks some of the sublime quality of the earlier ... LP, Vinyl record album
