A sweet funky set from the Canadian scene – served up by a combo headed by organist Vanessa Rodrigues – one of the few female players you'll find handling the Hammond these days! The album's got a really nice, lean sort of groove – almost funky jazz as much as it is deep funk – especially given the skills of Vanessa on the keys, as well as the guitarist in the group – both players who come together with a deft, rhythmic energy that almost recalls Prestige Records from years back. The one difference is that there's some surprisingly nice turntable work on most tracks – never overdone, and just kind of riffing away, almost as if it's acting like a rhythm guitar. Two tracks feature a bit of rhymes from MC BluRum 13, but the rest is instrumental – and titles include "Chompy", "Funky Pickle", "Ode To Monsant", "What's In This", and "Eater's Manifesto".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.
