Way more than just a funky reissue – and instead, an almost archival project in 70s soul! Gold are best remembered for their ultra-funky 45 "What About The Child" – one of those rare indie gems from back in the day – but at the time of that track, they also recorded a full album's worth of music – tapes that were never issued at all, and instead relegated to a backyard shed in Las Vegas – almost destroyed entirely because of the heat! Enter the crew at Jazzman, who wanted to reissue the single, stumbled upon the tapes, and unleashed this monster set to the world after all these years – a killer bit of indie funk from the mid 70s – a lost, local, hard-grooving set that stands strongly along similar records by groups like The Perfect Circle or Rhythm Machine! Lyrics are especially great – often a lot more thoughtful than usual for this sort of record, with some commentary on society and life that's quite unexpected – and the band, aka Welfare, grooves in this sweetly compressed mode that's mighty nice – almost like Bay Area funk from the same time.
