Marcus, Charlie, & Joan – Once Again
CD (Item 580052) Detroit Jazz Musicians Coop, 2009 — Condition: New Copy
Tight work from Detroit legend Marcus Belgrave – blowing trumpet here in a set that's a bit more straightforward than some of his famous recordings from the 70s – but one that's still equally soulful, too! The album features Belgrave as a co-leader with tenorist Charlie Gabriel, whose talents are equally well-showcased – and the set also features some nice vocals from Joan Belgrave, who sings on 4 of the album's 10 tracks – rounding things out with the kind of soulful reach we'd expect to hear on a sweet local club date from the Belgraves. The rhythm section's got just the right sort of snap to make the music work nicely – and titles include "Que Pasa Ning", "Brownie's Town", "Bill For Bennie", "Once Again", "Wilhamena", and "Excitable". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
