Don Randi — Don Randi Live On The Sunset Strip ... LP

Sunny mid 60s live material from Don Randi – playing in nice little nightclub setting on The Sunset Strip! The Hollywood scene of the mid 60s could make anyone groove – and perhaps none finer than west coast mainstay Don Randi – and this batch of piano trio instrumentals is prime proof! The set was played before a lively crowd who really get into the rhythms on the album's uptempo tracks – and it was recorded live at Sherry's in Hollywood. Titles include "Carnival", "Mellow Yellow", "Bang Bang", "Hang Loose", and "He Said She Said".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Don't let the cover fool you – because the album's not the Hank Mobley album with John Jenkins on alto, nor the Blue Note 1550 quintet session – but instead some unreleased material with the great Sonny Clark on piano! The group's a five piece, with Kenny Dorham on trumpet – but ... CD

A great little session by Jackie McLean – recorded in 1962 by Blue Note, but not issued until years later, only initially in Japan! The album's one of Jackie's last pure hardbop sides – recorded in the pivotal year of 1962, when he was just beginning to dip his toe into modernist ideas ... CD

A stone 70s classic from reedman Carlos Garnett – and a set that's every bit as righteous as you'd guess from the cover and the title! Garnett really soars to the heavens here – blowing a mixture of different instruments in a setting that takes off from his classic Black Love album, ... CD

Tremendous work from Azar Lawrence – part of a great return to form the reedman has had in recent years – and, if anything, a run of music that's maybe even greater than his legendary sides from the 70s! Lawrence is razor-sharp throughout – spinning out bold, soulful lines on ... CD

One of Stanley Turrentine's best albums ever – but a record that was recorded in 1962, yet only released by Blue Note 20 years later! The set's a great example of the sheer raw power that Stan had in his tone before it got watered down by his pop-jazz recordings of the later 60s – a ... CD

Sweet flute work from the great Sam Most – a player who really shone brightly during his 50s recordings for Bethlehem Records – of which this is one of the best! Sam's got a mean, lean quality to his solos – a mode that rivals that of Frank Wess on the instrument at the time, and ... CD

A massive hit for the duo of Calvin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples – and for good reason too! The set's equally well-balanced between upbeat, keyboard-heavy groovers and key mellower tracks – just the kind of rounded record we might expect from Ashford & Simpson at their late 70s best ... CD
