Another great collection of Senegalese music from the folks at Dakar Sound – this one focusing on the strong Latin tinge heard in much of the scene's golden era! With the rise of the Star Band in the 60s, Cuban grooves were the rage in Dakar, and the tracks here show the influence in varied permutations. Latin rhythms are a wonderful abstraction in "Dioubou", a searing slice of mbalax from the Royal Band marked by blistering guitar work and propulsive tama drumming, while the brisk "Vampampero" by the great Number One De Dakar could've been straight out of Havana if not for Yahya Fall's burning guitar. Yet, as much of the grooves are Afro-Cuban, the melodies, singing, and the frequent use of Wolof language are straight out of Senegal! Other tracks include "Wouyou Ma" by Takarnasse, "Lima" by Canari De Kaolack, and "Si Si Ye" by Mar Seck, another vocalist from Number One De Dakar. © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
