A great reminder of the important contributions to jazz that Saheb Sarbib made back in the 80s – especially when he could cook up a richly collaborative session like this! The groove is relatively straight, but the players are nicely freewheeling – just what you'd expect when you've got a lineup that includes Ahmed Abdullah and Roy Campbell on trumpets, Jemeel Mondoc and Mark Whitecage on alto sax, Booker T and David Pate on tenor, Guilherme Franco on percussion, and even a bit of guest tenor from Frank Wright! Sarbib has this Mingus-like way of forging the whole ensemble together with tightness – yet letting the individual voices burst out beautifully too – and even though the record's got some slight electric bass, most of the best energy is acoustic.
