CD (Item 468065) Candid (UK), 1960 — Condition: New Copy

A previously unreleased album from reedman Wilton Bogey Gaynair – recorded with some great help from trumpeter Shake Keane! The set was recorded in 1960 – at a time when both Gaynair and Keane were making some great impressions on the London jazz scene – awash in new energy in the post-war, post-colonial years – and really stretching out from stodgier modes of the past. Gaynair's horn is wonderfully open on some of these tracks – more so than on his previous Blue Bogey album – with a style that's quite modern at times, and showing a bit of influence from both Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. Keane joins in on trumpet and flugelhorn on 3 of the album's 6 tracks – working out some great interplay with Gaynair, at a level that's slightly more inside than his work with Joe Harriott, but equally exciting. Rhythm is from the trio of Terry Shannon on piano, Jeff Clyne on bass, and Bill Eyden on drums – as tight here as on some Tubby Hayes sessions – and titles include "Rianyang", "Africa Calling", "Just For Jan", "Kingston Bypass", and "Blue Ghana".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
