Way more than just "abstractions" – as the set's a very focused batch of some of the larger ideas that John Lewis had about jazz – explored beautifully here away from the Modern Jazz Quartet! The album has Lewis working with frequent partner – and fellow third stream conceptualist – Gunther Schuller – and also features great guest work from Ornette Coleman on alto, Joe Wilder on trumpet, Jim Hall on guitar, and Scott LaFaro on bass – all very different talents at the forefront of jazz at the time, helping bring a wider range of voices than you might normally get on a John Lewis project. Titles include "Abstraction", "Variants On A Theme of Thelonious Monk", and "Piece For Guitar & Strings".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Bird Feathers
Prestige (Japan), 1957. New Copy
A really great title for this classic late 50s set – as the record showcases a host of young alto players who've all come up in the generation of Charlie Parker – but who are each bringing their own sense of style to the instrument! There's hardly any "bird feathers" here ... CD

Taylor's Tenors
Prestige/New Jazz (Japan), 1959. New Copy
Art Taylor's a drummer, but he gladly gives center stage here to the tenors – a great pairing of Frank Foster and Charlie Rouse, both of whom hit some of their hardest notes of the 50s on this date! The album's got a tighter quality than some of the more open-ended blowing session dates of ... CD

Inner Feelings
Vistone/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy
A crazy bit of funk from drummer Roy Porter – a player who first rose to fame during the LA bop years of the late 40s, but who sounds even hipper here in the 70s! The album's got a madly skittish approach to funk – one that's highly rhythmic, but often in unconventional ways – ... CD

Columbia/Raven (Australia), 1973/1974/1975. New Copy 2 CDs
A trio of classics from the mighty Tom Scott! First up is the landmark Tom Scott & The LA Express – a real breakout moment for reedman Scott – the first truly big album for the saxophonist who'd been blowing some great records on his own, and lending his horn to a host of classic ... CD
