A standout classic from trumpeter Luis Gasca – and a set that may well be the artists' most complete musical vision of the 70s! The group here is larger than on previous records, and Gasca's dropped a bit of his Latin roots in exchange for a soaring, slightly spiritual sound put together by arranger Don Menza – who's really at the top of his game here! There's a perfection and poise that's almost like CTI or Kudu at their best – almost a bit above the usual Fantasy Records session like this from the 70s, too! Other players include Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Menza and Hadley Caliman on reeds, Patrice Rushen on keyboards, and Harvey Mason on some mighty nice drums – which makes for more than a bit of funk in the mix. Titles include the sweet vibes/Rhodes number "Kathy", the stepper "Sara", and the tracks "Visions", "The Way I Feel Sometimes", "Patrice", "Collage", and "Night People".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Way Out Wardell
RPM/Boplicity (UK), 1956. New Copy
Seminal sounds from the LA scene of the late 40s – one of the most important records to showcase the tenor talents of the legendary Wardell Gray – a key player on the harder side of the west coast for its formative bop years – and one whose career was cut short all too soon! The ... CD

Cosmic Funk
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1974. New Copy
A real gem from Lonnie Liston Smith's early years in the studio – and a record that's perhaps a bit more "cosmic" than it is "funk" – but that's why we like it so much! The session has Lonnie stretching out a bit more than usual – borrowing some of the ... CD

Black Whip/Snake Rhythm Rock
BGP (UK), 1973. New Copy
A great 2-in-1 CD that combines the last two albums that Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones cut for Prestige! Unlike some of the other players on Prestige during the early 70s – who often got a bit weaker as the decade moved on, thanks to the departure of some of the better forces arranging and ... CD

Prestige/BGP (UK), 1974. New Copy
One of the last Gary Bartz albums for Prestige – and a really unique session with a different feel than some of his earlier work! Gary's still got plenty of angular funk in his sound here – thanks to some edgey keyboards from Hubert Eaves – but he's also tightened things up a bit ... CD

Love, Sex, And The Zodiac
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1974. New Copy
A classic from Cannoball and producer-partner David Axelrod – truly great stuff and maybe even better than the Zodiac set Cannonball did for Capitol! The formula is similar to that one – with David Axelrod producing, electric keyboards by Hal Galper and George Duke, spacey solos by ... CD

A very hip group from the 70s Philly scene – a jazz combo who've got a soulful swing and a wonderfully lyrical feel! The record has a bit of vocals, but really just added in as flavoring for the quartet's excellent instrumental interplay – a blend of tenor and flute with piano, bass, ... CD

A stunning large ensemble set from trombonist Michael Dease – the first we've ever heard from him in this format, and a record that brings us back to some of the most inventive bigger bands of the late 60s – such as groups by Duke Pearson, or the team of Thad Jones & Mel Lewis! No ... CD

Bethlehem, 1956. New Copy
An excellent and oft-overlooked 50s session from Duke – recorded in Chicago as a one-off for the Bethlehem label, and done with a lush, rich sound that's really tremendous! The group's nicely restrained and very moody – playing here in a mellow late nite mode that offers a good focus ... CD

Really tremendous work from tenorist Eric Wyatt – a set that has the musician really coming into his own, and maybe emerging as one of the most soulful, spiritual players in recent years! The set bristles with soaring energy – a really kind of old school blend of spiritual jazz and ... CD
