"Power" is right, as this is one of Dex's few great group sessions from the late 60's. Unlike a lot of other records from the time – in which he solos long and meanderingly with a piano trio backing him up, on standards he's played a million times – this one has him playing with a tight group that includes James Moody, Barry Harris, Buster Williams, and Albert Heath, on a set of nice original material with titles like "Fried Bananas", "Boston Bernie", and "Sticky Wicket". There's also 2 jazz standards – "Lady Bird" and "Meditation" – but they're both taken in a nice tight way, and in keeping with the rest of the album. (Blue label pressing. Cover has a cutout square.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Gettin' Around
Blue Note, Mid 60s. Very Good
A really unusual album for Dexter Gordon – one that has him working in a quintet with vibes by Bobby Hutcherson! Hutcherson's sound really transforms the session, giving it a shimmering middleground that disperses the dominance that Gordon's tenor usually has – and creating a warm, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Solo Piano
Prestige, 1969. Very Good+
The title kind of says it all, so let us just tell you that the album was recorded in 1969, during one of the most fruitful periods of Byard's career, when he was opening up tremendously as a musician, with confidence and freedom that he rarely expressed at any other point in his career. Perception, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
We've always been enormous fans of this LP, which features Moody backed by The Albert, a "progressive" funk/rock group. This Perception release is a righteous concept LP dedicated to "revolution" and "change". And more importantly, there is indeed some totally ... LP, Vinyl record album
