A beautiful record – and one that definitely lives up to the "innovative" name in the title! The set's a bit more complex, and more jazz-based than some of the other Folkways albums from Bilal Abdurahman – still very much in the spare modes of his other records, but also with more of an emphasis on soprano sax and flute, played with these wonderfully lyrical styles – and mixed in with rhythms on woodblock, drums, and even various body parts! There's a kalimba on one number that sounds especially nice – and titles include "Witty Ditty", "Soprano Saxophone Interlude", "Tone Poem Mysterioso", "Counting Rhythms", "Imaginary African Rain Forest", "Shake It Loose", and "Stepping To School So Cool". (Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label.
