One of the lesser known John Barry soundtracks, to one of the lesser known Bond films – but a nice one! The record has a beautiful easy quality that's a bit different from some of Barry's other work, and which allies it a bit more with the Sound Gallery/Sound Spectrum sound of the late 60s. The vocal cut's sung by Louis Armstrong – but we love the sweeping strings and harpsichord of tracks like "Ski Chase", "Main Theme", and "Journey To Blofeld's Hideaway". A pretty compelling John Barry score – written for this strange semi-comedy which starred George C Scott and Julie Christie, and which was directed by Richard Lester. Great Escape
United Artists, Mid 60s. Very Good
Nice tune! The groovy main theme to this one far outlived the film, and showed up all over the place in the 60s – on instrumental theme records, TV spoofs, and other oddball sources. The rest of the score's pretty great, too – and features some compelling orchestrations by Bernstein, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Lenny
United Artists, 1974. Very Good
Although the great Lenny Bruce never appeared in the Bob Fosse film based on his tragic story, Dustin Hoffman did a pretty great job of recreating his style, and of bringing together good performances of some of the most important monologues by Lenny, which are often missing from his other recorded ... The first James Bond soundtrack – pre-John Barry, but already showing Bond music as a genre unto itself! A pretty darn great soundtrack from Neal Hefti – with some great mod bits too! There's a lot of groovy organ on the set – and plenty of go-go drums that give the tracks a garagey soulful sound that separates the record from most of Hefti's other soundtrack work – a slightly ...
