Social Climbers
LP (Item 586381) Drag City, 1981 — Condition: New Copy
The great self-titled album by Social Climbers – a postpunk group with roots in midwestern Bloomington, Indiana, but made this record in the fertile underground NYC scene of the early 80s – a jaw-droppingly innovative set built with a drum machine, farfisa, bass, guitar and brilliant vocals! The group utilizes the same kind of boundless creative freedom that was going on in the no wave scene, but the Social Climbers really have a sound all their own. It's tough to describe. Terse beats and organ tunes with something of a sinister mode, but nowhere near as caustic – and vocals that range from kind of a spoken urban poetic vibe to surprisingly soulful singing. The songs range from dark avant pop, to some kind of dubby textures and well beyond. A great one! Includes "Domestic", "Chicken 80", "Western World", "Chris & Debbie", "Palm Springs", "That's Why", "Ernie K", "Hello Texas" and Taipai". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
