A stone classic from Switch – one of Motown's leading hopes in the early 80s soul scene, and for good reason too! These guys have a wonderfully well-rounded approach – great on ballads and even more compelling on groovers – a balance here that puts them proudly in the company of contemporaries like Maze or Slave, with a sound that's sometimes right in the middle of both. We love the mellow cuts especially, as they really give the group a chance to show off their vocal chops – and singers include both Bobby and Tommy DeBarge. Titles include "Keep Movin On", "Get Back With You", "Don't Take My Love Away", "I Finally Found Someone New", and "My Friend In the Sky". Fire It Up
Gordy, 1979. Very Good+
Rick James fires it up at the end of the 70s – stepping out at full star power that has him rivaling the strength of Bootsy Collins at Warner, and paving the way for the rise of Prince in the early 80s! As with Prince, James' version of funk here is a bit offbeat – lots of riffing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Solid
United Artists, 1975. Near Mint-
A tasty set from Mandrill – one of their first records away from the Polydor label, but every bit as great as later efforts for that company, especially Mandrilland. The overall sound is a bit smoother than some of their full-out funky albums – but in a way that really helps blend ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sons Of Champlin
Ariola, 1975. Very Good+
One of the best albums we've ever heard from this funky rock group – kind of a mix of styles by groups like Average White Band, Sweetwater, and Tower Of Power. The album features the great funk track "Without Love", which begins with a monster break that has a very dark Eric B kind ... LP, Vinyl record album
