CD (Item 615812) Rhubarb Recordings, 1968 — Condition: New Copy

A sweet set of numbers from The Academy Brass – a group that's led by trombonist Dick Noel, and which definitely features the brass promised in their name – but which also features some other cool and groovy 60s touches – played by hip LA musicians who include Emil Richards on vibes, Jimmy Rowles on electric piano, Carol Kaye on bass, Larry Bunker on percussion, and Bud Shank on flute and clarinet! Tunes are bouncy and bright – a bit like some of the more playful jazz recorded on Liberty in the late 60s – done with a similar mix of covers that are arranged in really cool ways – either by Mike Barone or Billy Byers. Titles include "Shades", "Alright Okay You Win", "As I Wander", "Fred", "When I Look In Your Eyes", "Dindi", and "The Happy Whistler".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Don't Let Go (plus bonus tracks): A sweet bit of modern funk from George Duke – working here in a mode that's definitely tighter and more soul-based than his trippier albums of the early 70s – but also in a groove that's pretty ... read more

Victory Honor & Glory – David Boykin Live In Concert: A raw, live set from Chicago saxophonist David Boykin – but a great little record that really reminds us of a classic 60s session on ESP! Boykin's reeds are wonderful throughout – filled with ... read more

David Boykin Expanse
Live At The Velvet Lounge: "Expanse" is a mighty big name for the group that David Boykin uses on this record – especially given that the combo's only a quintet – but that's ok with us, because the sound here ... read more
