Jazz Al Centro Pirelli
CD (Item 479960) Cinedelic (Italy), 1970 — Condition: New Copy
A rare 1970 set from Italian tenorist Gianni Basso – a set that's easily one of the greatest examples of his talents we've ever heard! Basso's tone on tenor is amazing – blown with a sense of freedom that's breathtaking, with odd phrasings and voicings that are extremely personal – almost in the territory of Sonny Rollins on his live classics of the 60s, or Albert Ayler in more inside moments – even though Gianni's never too outside. There's a sense of balance here that's brilliant – as Basso clearly could let loose into much freer territory, yet always keeps his cool and instead fits the tunes with a range of sounds few others players might match. The rest of the group is wonderful too – with Renato Sellani on piano, Giorgio Azzolini on bass, and Gil Cuppini on drums – working with Gianni on titles that include "Gingerbread Boy", "Naima", "So What", "Reaching Forth", and "Sweet Little Maya". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
