One of the sharpest sessions we've heard from Nicole Mitchell in years – a record that still holds onto the spiritual depth she's developed strongly over the past decade, yet one that also returns to some of the bolder avant modes of her roots! The group here is nice and lean – Mitchell on flutes, alongside David Boykin on tenor, Craig Taborn on piano, and Chad Taylor on drums and percussion – a Chicago group recorded in a comfortable local setting, one that really allows them to stretch out and hit new heights! It's great to hear Mitchell hitting so many voices with her instrument – and there's a broad range of tones and moods that really reminds us of the early AACM tradition. Titles include "Surface Of Syrius", "Visitations", "Ritual & Rebellion", "Chocolate Chips", "Wild Life", "Wishes", and "Affirmations".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Pure genius throughout – two great albums on a single CD! Trombone Jazz Samba is an overlooked gem from Bob Brookmeyer – and a set that fits in strongly with the other Verve Records bossa nova albums of the 60s! Bob's the center star on valve trombone, but the record's awash in work ... CD

A raw, live set from Chicago saxophonist David Boykin – but a great little record that really reminds us of a classic 60s session on ESP! Boykin's reeds are wonderful throughout – filled with the depth of soul we might expect from Kalaparusha or Albert Ayler – and set up here in ... CD
Live At The Velvet Lounge
Sonic Healing Ministries, 2005. New Copy
"Expanse" is a mighty big name for the group that David Boykin uses on this record – especially given that the combo's only a quintet – but that's ok with us, because the sound here is more than large enough to warrant the name! Boykin's working with a great batch of players ... CD
