Walter Wanderley — Cheganca ... CD 13.99

Bossa nova meets organ jazz – a real classic from the great Walter Wanderley, recorded right on the heels of his famous Rain Forest album for Verve! This set's in a very similar format to that one – core trio grooving with organ, bass, and drums – sometimes augmented with added percussion to expand out the bossa and samba rhythms of the tunes, but always done in that lean, clean style that made Wanderley a key figure in transforming the sound of the Hammond back in the 60s – not just in Brazil, but in US jazz circles as well! Tracks are all short, tight, and very groovy – and titles include "Voce E Eu", "Aqua De Beber", "Man & A Woman", "Amanha", and "Da Me". (Cover has a cutout hole, some wear, and aging.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Kee-Ka-Roo
Verve, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of our favorite albums ever from Walter Wanderley – a set that's much more complicated than his earlier trio records for Verve – and which really expands the sound with a host of added elements! Wanderley's core organ bossa groove is amplified wonderfully here with the addition of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Samba So!
World Pacific, Early 60s. Very Good+
A rare bossa session by Wanderly – recorded early in his career in Brazil, and issued here in the US by World Pacific. It's as tight a batch of bossa organ grooves as any of Wanderley's best albums from the 60's – and he's playing with a larger lineup than usual, which adds a lot to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rain Forest
Verve, 1966. Very Good-
An album that not only broke the bossa big in the US – but a set that also really helped transform the sound of the organ in jazz! Not only is the record a key meeting of bossa rhythms and jazz organ – transplanted hugely to the US after a big initial Wanderley run in 60s Brazil – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shadow Of Your Smile
Verve, 1965. Near Mint-
One of Astrud Gilberto's greatest albums – and quite possibly our personal favorite! The record features beautifully understated arrangements by Joao Donato, Don Sebesky, and Claus Ogerman – and the instrumentation is a haunting mix of bossa rhythms with darker orchestrations that ... Crystal Illusions
A&M, 1969. Near Mint-
Dreamy loveliness from Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66! The album's one of their true 60s classics for A&M – a sublime blend of female vocals, Brazilian rhythms, and jazzy instrumentation – groovily dancing with a light and breezy sound that influenced a generation, and which still ... Buddah, Early 70s/1976. Near Mint- 2LP
Killer reissue that combines both of the albums that Airto recorded for Buddah in the early 70s! The records were done with the help of Flora Purim and Hermeto Pascoal, plus Sivuca and Dom Um Romao – and they both boast perfect production, and just the right mix of Brazilian instrumentation ... Sergio Mendes (1983)
A&M, 1983. Very Good
Upbeat soul from Sergio Mendes – but a record that's still got a Brazilian heart beating underneath! The sound of the set is very much in the best mainstream soul modes of the time – never too electric overall, but put together with a nicely warm groove that continues the legacy of ... Wing, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Fantastic – and a record that we passed up for years! This one looks like a knockoff from the cover, but it's a really great outing that features bossa nova numbers played by a studio combo known only as The Tides – and whose instrumentation features piano, percussion, bass, acoustic ... Cascades
Milestone, 1982. Very Good
Fantastic fusion from Azymuth – a group who just couldn't miss during these early 80s California years! The sound here is smooth, but never slick – always a little offbeat, and quite different from more mainstream US fusion of the time – thanks to the genius of Jose Roberto ... LP, Vinyl record album

Humble People
Concord, 1985. Near Mint-
Almost a return to basics for Airto and Flora – singing here in more of a jazzy fusion style than on some of her late 70s R&B sessions. The Concord production almost gives the album the feel of a Tania Maria set for the label – using core jazzy backings, plus some expanded ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pretty great stuff from Jobim – later than the classic years, but with a dark sophisticated sound that's pretty darn compelling. The album features larger orchestrations by Claus Ogerman, and in a way, it's similar to the Jobim album on Decca from 1973 – in that it's got all the simple ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tower, Mid 60s. Very Good
Nice early stuff from Sergio – also issued as the album Brazil 65 on Capitol! That's Brasil 65, not Brasil 66 – a distinction that marks a key early stage for the great Sergio Mendes – heard here on one of his first albums to mix together bossa jazz and vocals! The approach here ... LP, Vinyl record album
