Basie Is Our Boss

CD (Item 612263) Argo (Japan), 1963 — Condition: New Copy

Basie may be his boss, but Frank Foster's definitely his own man – especially working here on this hip little session for Chess Records – a small group date with some key members of the Count's ensemble! There's a bit of the Basie sense of arrangement in the tunes – especially in the playful way the horns come together – but other points have a looser, more soul jazz sort of approach – a great mix of modes that's a bit like some of Foster's recordings of the 50s, but even groovier overall! In addition to Frank's tenor, the group also features excellent flute and tenor from Eric Dixon – plus trumpet from Al Aarons, piano from John Young, bass from Buddy Catlett, and drums from Phil Thomas – on titles that include "Samba Blues", "Kelly Blue", "May We", and "Vested Interest".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
