A fantastic early album fromTom Scott – cut when he was still a teenager, and a record that combines some sonic adventurousness with hard bop leaning sounds! Scott, especially on his early albums, is one heck of a reed player, and can get as funky as the best of them. This LP includes a massive breakbeat track called "Rural Still Life #26", plus a lot of other nice ones that mix jazz, funk, and grooviness – which may have made it a hard sell at the time, but the blend of the bold and the more easygoing sounds is pretty sweet today. Scott's quartet includes Mike Lang on keyboards, Chuck Damanico on bass, and John Guerin on drums. Titles "Freak In", "Juss Messin' Around", and "With Respect To Coltrane". A great one, and don't pass it up! (Rainbow label pressing in a heavy glossy gatefold cover, with light wear and promo sticker.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Club Date
Impulse, 1964/1976. Very Good+
One of the greatest albums ever from Yusef Lateef – even if it's sometimes overlooked! The album was issued in the 70s, but it features material from the famous Live At Pep's concert in 1964 – but which didn't appear on that initial record. In fact, it's arguably a lot hipper than ... One of Yusef Lateef's most fantastic records, and an album that grooves in a way that few of his other ones do. Recorded live in 1964, this material was part of the same session that comprised the classic Club Date LP, which included the track "Brother John" (not on this album). This ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Hodges sits in with trombonist Lawrence Brown and his all-star group that includes Harold Ashby on tenor, Ray Nance on coronet, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, and Cat Anderson on trumpet. As you'd expect, this set's got a strong swing vibe and a good Basie groove to it. Tracks are short, with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sweet Latin licks from Clark Terry and Chico O'Farrill – cut in a mode that's very similar to O'Farrill's best Verve work of the 60s! The vibe is kind of a mod take on Afro Cuban sounds – not really Latin soul, but with a playful vibe that mixes together jazz and Latin with equal parts ... LP, Vinyl record album

The Hawk, in prime late form, lays down some beautiful tenor solos over gentle bossa nova accompaniment – working in a mode that's much more satisfying than just a "classic player meets bossa" session, angularly crafting the solos with that dark edge that he had in all of his later ... A great little Sonny Stitt album – very different than any of his other sets from the 60s! A great bit of 70s electric work from Quincy – and probably his funkiest album ever!
