Sweet Freedom – Now What?

A partial tribute to the music of Max Roach – particularly that crucial moment of righteous Civil Rights energy during his Freedom Now period – handled here with great sensitivity by the trio of Joe McPhee on tenor, soprano sax, and clarinet, Lisle Ellis on bass, and Paul Plimley on drums! Some of the tunes are Roach numbers from the late 50s and early 60s – those haunting, soul-searching tunes that formed the blueprint for progressive jazz expression for years to come – and other numbers are originals by members of the group, but in a very similar spirit. All work is handled in a spacious, contemplative mode that's much more the voice of the trio members than that of Roach – which is quite fitting, as these meditations on freedom are offered more as a reflection of changes since the Civil Rights era – and demonstrate that greatly with their execution.
