If ever there was an album to prove the old Columbia/Atlantic split about Aretha's strengths and talents, this is it. The record works on a formula that should be strong enough – and it has Aretha reprise a number of classic R&B tunes by Dinah Washington. However, the arrangements by Robert Mersey are perhaps a bit too steeped in fake authenticity, which means that although the tracks are technically perfect, they lack some of the soul we would have liked to hear from Aretha. Titles include "Evil Gal Blues", "Soulville", "Unforgettable", "Cold Cold Heart", "Drinking Again", and "This Bitter Earth".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.
