A rare American outing from British bandleader Laurie Johnson – an artist who's probably best known for his famous soundtrack work of the 60s, but who steps out here in a surprisingly nice instrumental mode! The style here is a bit like that of John Dankworth on some of his American records – jazzy at the core, but also with larger orchestral flourishes that put the work somewhere between jazz and popular instrumental. But given Johnson's penchant for hip timing and a nicely swinging groove, the album's pretty nice all the way through – never sleepy, and done with a good sense of presence on some of the instruments. Titles include "Jenny", "By Myself", "Pagan Love Song", "Nevada", "South Of The Border", "Bali Hai", "Twango", and "My Favorite Things". (White label promo. Cover has light wear, a spot of tape with a small rip on the spine, and some pen on the back. Label has a sticker.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Prestige, 1969. Very Good-
A sweetly funky set from Johnny Hammond Smith – a date done right at the start of the jazz funk era on Prestige – and one that marks a nicely heavy change in Johnny's sound! Blue Note, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
One of Jimmy's funkiest albums ever – a sweeeeet batch of short, hard, and funky cuts – and a record that ranks right up there with the mighty Soul Sugar for sheer funkiness! Jimmy takes an upbeat and easygoing approach to the late 60s funk sound, with a nice, rubbery bass and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

My World
Columbia, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Although Jo Basile made some snoozier albums for Audio Fidelity, this one for Columbia's a gem, and has a great groovy jet-set swingin' feel to it. Jo plays accordian and vibes, and he also arranges the whole thing with a nice tight sound. Tracks include versions of "Man & A Woman", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1957. Very Good-
A dreamy exploration of south sea ideals from the great Les Baxter – a set that's got a more lightly drifting quality than some of his more percussive exotica albums, and which is awash in dreamy soundscapes penned by Les himself!
