One of the coolest club projects of the 70s – a set of tracks based around the keyboards of Don Ray, but handled with lots of electronic disco touches from Cerrone! The pair are great arrangers on their own, but together they really make some magic – kind of a leaner take on the extended Cerrone groove – honed to a "t" in the studio, and sometimes given a nice punch with chorus vocals too. The tracks are shorter than you'd normally get from Cerrone, but still filled with all those freewheeling clubby grooves – warmly soulful undercurrents that make a great platform for the more electronic keyboards – never too cold at all, and a fair bit more personal than the sorts of keys we're used to hearing from the European scene. A really unique record – a partnership we wish worked together more like this, although we're plenty happy to have this treasure too! Titles include "Garden Of Love", "My Desire", "Body & Soul", "Got To Have Loving", and "Standing In The Rain".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

You Send Me
Polydor, 1978. Very Good-
A masterpiece – and don't pass it up! Sure, the date's a bit later than some of Roy's classic work, but the record's got a sound like no other – with a slow mellow jazzy style that shows Roy working at the height of his powers! There's some wonderful spacey production on the record ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray, Goodman, & Brown
Polydor, 1979. Very Good
Sweet silky harmony soul from the trio of Harry Ray, Billy Brown, and Al Goodman – the group's first album under a new name – after some previous indie work as The Moments! Polydor, 1976. Very Good
One of Roy Ayers' biggest albums ever! The whole thing's an incredible album of mellow jazzy soul – and it shows Roy at the crossroads, perfecting his earlier funk style with a sweet mellow R&B edge, getting a bit slicker, but still staying on the righteous path, and opening up a whole ... Ode, 1975. Very Good- Gatefold
A really great album by Eugene McDaniels! This one's not as radical as his Headless Heroes LP – but it's got a jazzy soulful approach that shows that he could still keep it real without going over the top. Oddly, he's billed as Gene McDaniels on the cover, leaving us to wonder if he's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smash, 1966. Very Good+
Possibly the best instrumental album that James Brown cut for Smash! Unlike some of the other albums, this one features a set list that's mostly originals – and a number of tracks have a longer groove than usual, which lets James and the band stretch out instrumentally. Invictus, 1973. Very Good-
A bit confused at points, but one of the funkiest albums on Invictus! The 8th Day group was a loosely conceived batch of Detroit soul talents designed to cash in on a concept of the Holland-Dozier-Holland team – but fortunately, they also included some wonderful talents that could make some ... Wand, 1975. Very Good- Gatefold
The one and only album cut by this great little group – a seminal force in the pre-disco club years, with a soaring full-on sound that was in the same mode as other groups like BT Express or The Trammps. Includes their classics – like "We're On the Right Track", "Train ... LP, Vinyl record album
