Danish Radio Jazz Group – With Eric Moseholm & Ray Pitts 1965 (Japanese paper sleeve edition)
CD (Item 599844) Debut/Jazzhus Disk (Japan), 1965 — Condition: New Copy
Brilliant work from the Danish modern jazz scene of the 60s – a group that has way more to offer than you might guess from the "radio" in their name – and a sound that's certainly more striking than any jazz that was hitting American airwaves at the time! The ensemble is somewhat large, but has a way of hitting these sharp-edged modes you'd be more likely to hear from a small modern jazz combo – never too outside, but definitely pushing the boundaries of jazz – and through ways that are quite different than most American modern inspirations of the time. In other words, there's not really any traces of Kenton, Russell, or Evans – and instead the music has a way of exploding right from the start – always a rich tapestry of sound, but one that's somehow bristling with individual expressions from players who include Palle Mikkelborg and Allan Botschinsky on trumpets, Bent Jaedig on tenor and flute, Niels Husum on soprano sax and tenor, Bent Nielson on baritone and clarinet, Louis Hjulmand on vibes, Bent Axen on piano, and Alex Riel on drums. Erik Moseholm and Ray Pitts work together to direct the group – on titles that include "Hanne", "Gizzy", "Voyage Of The Star Bird", "Fujiyama", and "Sound Like Arnoldi". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
