4.50 5

An incredible album from Donald Byrd – hard, funky, and with more of an edge than most of his other Blue Note work! The sound on the album's incredibly sinister – really concerned with downward chord turns in moody rhythms – played with a real sense of soul by a frontline that features Byrd, Hank Mobley, and Sonny Red. Cedar Walton drives most of the tunes with hypnotic lines on piano – and the rest of the rhythm's cooked up by Walter Booker on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Includes the massively hard funky title cut, "Blackjack", plus "Beale Street", "Loki", and some other nice groovers. Red and Mobley are amazing, and Byrd's solos are some of his cleanest and leanest of the 60s!  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Blue Note/Music Matters, 1961. New Copy 2LP Gatefold
One of the seminal sides cut by Donald Byrd in his partnership with Pepper Adams – a high-up, low-down set that's a smoker all the way through! Byrd's brightness on trumpet is nicely matched by Adams' fluid work on baritone sax – and the pair are wonderfully supported by a rhythm trio ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1969/1970. New Copy (reissue)
A fantastic set of tracks that was recorded at the cusp of the 70s, but which wasn't (for some strange reason) released until many years later! Donald Byrd's playing here with two different larger groups, and the music is a perfect bridge between his spacey late 60s attempts to mimic Miles Davis, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Slow Drag
Blue Note, 1968. New Copy (reissue)
Beautiful stuff – and one of the best Donald Byrd albums of the 60s! The album is a killer all the way through – recorded with a group that Byrd maintained for 2 years, one that featured Sonny Red on alto sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums ... Main Attraction
Kudu, 1976. New Copy (reissue)
Quite an unusual album from Grant Green – a record that's quite different than his earlier records for Blue Note, but still pretty darn great overall! Grant's working here in a large group – Kudu style – with arrangements by David Matthews, but a sound that's still pretty lean ... LP, Vinyl record album
Black Byrd
Blue Note, 1973. New Copy (reissue)
A landmark album – Donald Byrd's first session with producer Larry Mizell, the man who went onto forever change the face of jazz funk! Street Lady
Blue Note, 1973. New Copy (reissue)
A landmark album by Donald Byrd – the first one where he really started to click with jazz-funk producer Larry Mizell! Mizell and Byrd had worked together previously on the Black Byrd album – a soaring bit of futuristic jazz funk that took Byrd's career to a whole new level – but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Groove Merchant, 1973. New Copy (reissue)
The butt-squeezing cover should be enough to let you know that this is one funky album – but if that doesn't get the message across, the grooves certainly do! O'Donel Levy plays tight and funky guitar, and also sings a bit on the set – working with a tight combo that features Charles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1955. New Copy (reissue)
A completely unique little session – and a record that's every bit as musically striking as you might guess from its title and cover! The date's a rare Latin-tinged one for trumpeter Kenny Dorham – a record that takes his usually smooth sound and sets it up against octet backings with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Soul Station
Blue Note, 1960. New Copy (reissue)
Simply astounding! Soul Station is a deceptively simple album that has tenor giant Hank Mobley playing standards and originals in a quartet with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Blakey on drums– a spare and simple group, but one with a direct energy that's really amazing ... Blue Note, 1963. New Copy (reissue)
One of the most wonderful albums by one of our favorite jazz artists of all time! For this unique session, George Braith offers up "two souls in one" – by playing both soprano sax and "stritch" simultaneously – in a two-reed mode that recalls the work of Roland Kirk ... LP, Vinyl record album
