An amazing little record that's easily one of the most righteous albums ever from Philadelphia International – a set designed to "give back" to the communities who supported the label strongly in the 70s, as a unique fund-raising effort, done before such records were commonplace! The Philly International roster of stars teamed up to put out this stunning set of tracks aimed at cleaning up the "ghettoes", both physical and mental, that continue to haunt the African-American communities in the US – and the set features key new numbers, plus a few more older tracks pulled from other Philly records that really work well to support the righteous message of the set. The centerpiece is the long title cut – "Let's Clean Up The Ghetto" – which has Lou Rawls doing a monologue about the garbage strike in New York, then launches into performances by Teddy Pendergrass, The O'Jays, Billy Paul, and Archie Bell. Other highlights include "The Big Gangster" by The O'Jays, "Old People" by Archie Bell, "Everybody's Talkin" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, and "Now Is The Time To Do It" by Teddy Pendergrass.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Back Stabbers
Philadelphia International, 1972. Very Good
A landmark album for the O'Jays – a set that moved them from the indie ranks to 70s megasoulstatus! After years of bumping around on a variety of labels, and in a variety of styles, the group really exploded with this wonderful set – an album that has them soaring along in the ... What Color Is Love
Philadelphia International, 1977. Very Good+
Dee Dee's come a long way from "The Mashed Potato Time" here – emerging as a full-blown modern soul artist, with the same sort of sophisticated twist as other Philly girl singers, like Jean Carn or The Jones Girls. The title cut is a great remake of Terry Callier's "What Color ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hard Not To Like It
Philadelphia International, 1977. Very Good
One of the strong Philly LPs by Archie Bell and the Drells (and they really did make the transition to Philly pretty well). Side one has some of their more blatent attempts to appeal to the then hot disco crowd, but side two has them back in a great easy soul two-step sound, like "It's Hard ... LP, Vinyl record album

Philadelphia International, 1981. Very Good
Essential female Philly soul recorded by the Jones Girls, a group who came to Philly later than many of their big 70s acts, but who went onto become possibly the best female act who recorded with Gamble & Huff. The record's a group effort of the Philly team – with arrangements by Gene ... LP, Vinyl record album

The O'Jays keep on going strong – hitting a smooth mellow Philly vibe that takes them away from the style of their mid 70s hits! The sound here is a bit more uptempo than on the previous album So Full Off Love – but the group are still also really using the time to explore their ... LP, Vinyl record album

Teddy Pendergrass follows up the style of Lou Rawls' double live album for Philly International – and goes for a very similar mix of modes that showcases all his charm and soulful spirit! Unemployment Blues
Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good+
Nice Philly groove record by this obscure funky band from the 70's. The title cut, "Unemployment Blues", is a brassy funky track with political lyrics, but our favorite cuts on here are the smoother soul cuts, like "Baby I'm Yours" and "Toy Ball", which has a nice ... LP, Vinyl record album

A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! It all comes together on this one – funk, soul, politics, and production – and the record is still one of the clearest examples of James Brown's genius that you'll ever find! Amazing work from the great Jon Lucien – and probably his best-ever record!
