Tremendous work from this young group – a set that embraces a range of modern jazz traditions, then pushes them forward strongly to the next generation! The lineup here features some of the sharpest talents of the current Windy City underground – James Falzone on clarinet, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Jason Roebke on bass, and Tim Daisy on drums – all players who feel each others' strengths instantly, and find ways of coming together that are even greater than the sum of the already-strong parts! Falzone's clarinet is especially amazing – a fresh new voice on the instrument that pushes past even John Carter or Jimmy Giuffre – showing us that the instrument can really carve strong modern lines, when in the right hands. Adasiewicz's vibes are always a treat – and ring out beautifully – and both Roebke and Daisy have the right sort of freewheeling rhythms to set even more fire to the other two players. Titles include "Ukranian Village", "Carol's Burgers", "Chicago Spaces", "Brooklyn Lines", "Jazz Searching Self", and "Alone At The Brain".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

A very obscure player from the Romanian scene of the 70s – an acoustic pianist, but one who plays with the flow of a electric keyboardist – really opening up on the longer tracks on this rare album, with an especially great sense of his overall sound! Most numbers have just a core trio ... CD

Really sublime, really unique piano trio work from Manolo Juarez – an obscure 70s session that has a feel that's unlike anything else we can think of! The set was done for the Trova label in Argentina, but it's got echoes of other South American modes throughout – maybe a bit of bossa ... CD

CTI, 1973. New Copy Gatefold
One of Ron Carter's best from the 70s – a hip and subtle effort recorded for CTI, with a small group that includes Joe Henderson on tenor, Roland Hanna on piano, and Billy Cobham on drums! Henderson's tenor work dominates the album, and the long tracks really let him snake around mightily ... CD

A really lovely bit of jazz from Argentine pianist Manolo Juarez – and a set that's completely different both from the usual jazz piano trio album, and from other South American jazz of the time! There's a sense of lyricism that seems inherited from the bossa nova generation in Brazil – ... CD

A deeply spiritual group at the core – so much so that the songs here are all guided towards the aims of Krishna – but one who works with the best sort of jazzy soul styles of the late 70s! The album's become a surprising modern soul classic over the years – a record that was ... CD

Definitely a set to make you hallucinate – as the grooves are quite groovy, but in a really trippy way! The album's a bit like the classic Psicodelico set by Luiz Carlos Vinhas – a mix of older samba modes and wigged-out 60s sounds – sometimes odd production, sometimes offbeat ... CD

A sweet mix of clubby tracks and mellower moments from Willie Hutch – and an overlooked gem from his late 70s years on Whitfield Records! The set's got Willie definitely digging some of the disco styles of the time, but in a way that's never sellout at all – as his vocals and guitar ... CD
