CD (Item 466726) Ninja Tune (Canada), 1969 -- Condition: New Copy
A killer album of fuzzy late 60s grooves -- partly a psychedelic rock record, but also one that's got a fairly groovy sound overall -- almost a soundtrack sort of approach at times! That factor's no surprise, as The Dragons are a combo fronted by surf soundtrack maestros Dennis Dragon and Doug Dragon -- also featuring help from brother Darryl Dragon, later of Captain & Tennille fame! The core sound comes from lots of tight drums that almost get funky at points -- plus organ, electric piano, clavinet, and other keyboards -- sewn together with heavy bass, vibes, and a fair bit of vocals. Like some of the Dragon-penned soundtrack work, there's a flowing, open groove to the record -- a sound that's not as stiff or cliched as some of the mainstream rock at the time -- and which has a wonderfully vivid way of putting together simple instrumental moments to make whole new moments in sound. Most titles have vocals sung by members of the group, but the production style almost gives more preference to the instrumentation -- and titles include "Cosmosis", "Food For My Soul", "Sandman", "Amplified Emotion", "On The Wall", "Are You There", "Sunset Scenery", and "Pop's Bag". © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc. | ||||||
