A wonderfully mixed-up, messed-up batch of jazzy tracks from the great Steve Marcus – working here at the height of his late 60s powers on Atlantic's ultra-cool Vortex label! As with other Marcus albums of the time, there's kind of a long haired, freewheeling energy to the set – jazz that's still steeped in some of the best modern and soulful styles of the 60s, yet also touched a bit with some of the rock experiments at the time – not really in the instrumentation, but in the way the whole group approaches the groove. Marcus blows some mighty tenor sax – and the lineup also includes Herbie Hancock on electric and acoustic piano, Miroslav Vitous on bass, and Bob Moses on some pretty heavy drums. Some cuts have some hip larger arrangements – and titles include "Hope", "Wild Thing", "T With Strings", "America", "Amy", and "Hey Jude".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1981. New Copy
A previously-unissued performance from Joe McPhee – recorded in the early 80s, and a searing ensemble take on Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman"! The arrangements are beautiful – as the track retains some of the haunting melody of the original composition, yet has a loose, ... CD

A classic killer from trumpeter Tom Browne – a smoking set that still has all the jazz funk touches of his earlier records, yet which also picks up a bit of an electro vibe as well! The move here is a bit like that taken by some of Browne's labelmates on GRP at the time – particularly ... CD
