A great little album of southern funk from the 70s – cut by the team that provided musical backing on many of the classic Hi Records sessions from the time! The groove is a bit different than usual for Hi – not compressed, burning deep soul – but tight, funky, and flanged-out – a bit like what classic P-Funk might have been like, had it been recorded in Memphis! The group's super sharp in their playing – with great bass and electric keyboards – but they've also got kind of a trippy feel that's very surprising, given the more restrained soul quality of much of the stuff on Hi. The album's all original material, and most cuts have cool vocals slinking in and out of the funk – and titles include "On The Loose", "Skinny Dippin'", "Superstar", "Purple Raindrops", and "You Got Me Comin". (Includes MP3 download of the album!)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Hi Records, 1971. New Copy (reissue)
Al Green's first major album, and a killer batch of Memphis soul tracks with a sound that's a bit rawer than later years. The formula for the hits is firmly in place – and Al's beautiful voice is swept up wonderfully in very sympathetic production by the great Willie Mitchell. Although ... LP, Vinyl record album

Funky sax genius from Professor Earl Lett – a cool combo player who cut some great funky 45s at the end of the 60s and start of the 70s! The cuts here are a mix of instrumental and vocal numbers – but even the latter have plenty of reed work from Earl, blown with a sharp-edged and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Norton, 2013. New Copy
Brand new solo work from La La Brooks of The Crystals – a singer who first worked with Phil Spector when she was only 13 years old – and who still sounds pretty darn great all these many years later! The folks at Norton have kept the record strongly in an old school 60s soul mode ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capsoul/Asterisk, 1973. New Copy (reissue)
An incredible album of harmony soul – easily one of the best you could ever hope to find! The Four Mints were an obscure group, but they sound really wonderful here – just as great as some of the bigger proponents of the genre in the early 70s – with an especially great talent ... Wicked work from Jimmy Mawi – one of the coolest cats to work on the Kenyan scene of the 70s! Jimmy hailed from Madagascar, but cut his best work in Nairobi – and steps out here in this really weird, messed-up version of Afro Funk – one that also has plenty of bluesy riffs on the ... Midnight Marauders
Jive, 1993. New Copy (reissue)
A masterpiece from prime era Tribe Called Quest! Midnight Maurauders was Tribe's third LP, and even though there were no tracks yet credited to the Ummah, this is pretty much the beginning of Tribe's transition to that sound – with the same mellow, laid back vibe as their best early material ... The deeply in-demand beats for Jay Dee's now classic 2001 effort! We don't need to tell you that Welcome 2 Detroit turned out to be a wonderful debut for the initial BBE hip hop series.
