A much more solidly American album than some of Vicki Benet's other efforts of the time – which were usually more French-styled than this one! This time around, Vicki's got a great breathy style that's right up there with Julie London on Liberty – a late 50s sexiness that perfectly matches her ice blond look on the cover, and her slinky slinky dress! Arrangements are relatively gentle – strings, but never too lush – and Vicki hangs mostly in a ballad mode that's perfect for the breathiness of the recording. Titles include "Our Very Own", "The Boy Next Door", "Love Me", "There's A Small Hotel", "A Shade Of Blue", and "Heartstring Melody".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

A beautiful title for a beautiful record – one that sums up the subtle sense of sadness that makes the work of Chris Connor so great! There's a sense of longing here that steps out from the very first tune – one that's beautifully moody, without being overindulgent or too emotive. ... CD
Barbara Lea
Prestige (Japan), 1956/1957. New Copy
One of the few 50s albums ever cut from singer Barbara Lea – a great vocalist who seemed to get a bit more of a chance in the studio much later in her life! This session's got a slightly unusual feel – in that it's not really torchy, but also not as outrightly swinging either – ... CD

Sweet 70s funk from the great Oscar Brown – quite a change from his jazz-based work of the 60s, but a great new sitting for all of his wonderful wit and warmth! Brown's still a hell of a songwriter, and one with a very socially-conscious eye – sharper here than before, with lots of ... CD

Wild! Long before she was a hipster poet, and even longer before she was the Poet Laureate, Maya cut this early album of calypso tracks for Liberty – with a rootsy sound that's actually pretty darn nice! Maya wrote a larger number of the tracks, and backing is by Tommy Tedesco on guitar and ... CD

The title's a great one for the set – not just because Vikki Carr was a new artist for the 60s, but also because she's turned up a really fresh approach to vocals as well! Vikki's still rooted a bit in jazz modes of the decade before, but she's also got this sharper, more punctuated approach ... CD

An unusual set from the legendary vocalist Chris Connor – a record that's graced with a boozy later image of Chris on the front, but which features a host of rare gems from her late 50s years at Atlantic Records! There's some really wonderful work on the record that easily matches, if not ... CD

Wonderful work from Gregory Porter – easily one of the best new jazz singers to emerge in the past decade or so, and one whose approach is soulful enough to rival the greats of the 70s! There's echoes here of Bill Withers, Gil Scott-Heron, and Al Jarreau – and like all those artists, ... CD
