Herbie Mann takes strong inspiration from the great Ray Charles here – working in a cool mode that's partly the soulful sound of Mann's other work for Atlantic Records, and partly the fuller style of Charles' 60s music for ABC! Backings are full, but very groovy – thanks to arrangements by William Fischer that keep plenty of edges on the tunes – even amidst the larger strings and orchestrations! Herbie gets plenty of space to solo out front, and the album also features female backing vocals – but used in a spare way that only really seems to further enforce the groove! Titles include "Lonely Avenue", "I Got A Woman", "Drown In My Own Tears", and "Georgia On My Mind". (Red & green label pressing.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Different work than usual for Herbie – a series of sides recorded in Sweden in the late 50s, featuring Herbie on both flute and tenor! Push Push
Embryo, 1971. Very Good Gatefold
One of Herbie Mann's biggest albums – and one of his funkiest too! The cover's a bit of an off-putter – although it probably helped sell the record, back in the day – but the grooves are as rock-solid as anything that Herbie cut at the time – tight, focused, and a perfect ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the grooviest 60s live albums from Herbie Mann – done in a style that's a bit different from the rest! Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good-
Beautiful work from Jimmy Giuffre – and a key album in the development of his spare sound of the late 50s!
