Hugo's covering all bases here – as he makes his way through a number of late 60s Morricone spaghetti western themes, all done with his groovier than usual twist on the material! The Montenegro touches here include some augmented rhythms – snapping the tunes along with a much modder feel at times than the original – plus a nice use of electric bass at the bottom, and some sunshine-drenched vocal passages have some great harmonies! Titles include "The Vice Of Killing", "For A Few Dollars More", "Story Of A Soldier", "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly", "The Ecstasy Of Gold", "Sixty Seconds To What?", and "March With Hope". Wonderful wonderful wonderful – and way more than just the western-themed album you'd imagine from the title! Great grooviness from Neal Hefti – working here at the height of his 60s powers! The film stars Robert Morse, Barbara Harris, and Jonathan Winters – and the score's got a 60s screwball approach that mixes organ, woodwinds, percussion, and bits of strings together, all filtered through ... A groovy little Italian soundtrack – straight in some parts, but very nice in others! There's some sweet tunes that features wordless female vocals – in the mode of work by Armando Trovajoli or Ennio Morricone from the time – and there's other tunes that have a dancing groovy ... Kind of nutty stuff from this weird Blake Edwards film that starred James Coburn and Dick Shawn. The material's not a jazz-based as some of Mancini's other scores, but it does have a delightfully nutty sound that's in keeping with the kind of mad 60s film it was written for. Not as famous as other Henry Mancini soundtracks of the 60s – but a gem through and through, and a record that really shows the maturing talents of the maestro! Henry Mancini's second album of stuff for the Peter Gunn TV show, and arguably better than the first one! Over the years, how many films have been made about this guy anyway? We've never seen the movie, but the record's a gem – some very edgy scoring by Pete Rugolo, the ex-Kenton arranger who went on to do some great crime jazz work for a number of labels. A fairly dramatic score by Hopkins, written for this film directed by Sidney Lumet, written by Tennessee Williams, and starring Marlon Brando!
