X/Y (2CDs & book)
CD (Item 560933) Headspin (Sweden), 2011 — Condition: New Copy
A totally great little set from trumpeter Goran Kajfes – his most exciting work to date, and a record with a vibe that reminds us of 70s experiments from Don Cherry and Miles Davis! The double-length set is beautiful before you even hear it – packaged in a hardcover book-like jacket, with pages of artwork in the middle by a variety of different artists. But the music is even better – and the set kicks off with X – one CD of material by the Subtropic Arkestra, a mixed jazz/ethnic combo that features performances from Jonas Kullhammar on tenor, Per Rusktrask Johansson on baritone and flute, Jesper Nordenstrom on organ and Fender Rhodes, Robert Ostlund on moog, and a whole host of other hip players from the contemporary Swedish underground. Tunes on X have a very strong world-meets-jazz feel – trumpet lines woven over tablas mixed with electric funk, offbeat percussion, and more – very much like some of Cherry's best overseas recordings from years back. Then, the package continues with Y – a record with an equally experimental quality, but in a very different way! Y features trumpet from Goran, blended with lots of electronics – including loads of vintage keyboards, plus some acoustic percussion as well – a haunting, ethereal mix of sounds that's somewhere in a space between mellow electric Miles Davis and the fourth world musics of Jon Hassell! © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
