A near-lost chapter in the Stax Records catalog – and an album recorded by The MGs in the years after Booker left Memphis and the group for the California scene! The album features organist Carson Whitsett at the keys – doing a pretty good job of filling Booker's place – but the real strength of the set comes from drummer Al Jackson – who plays the kit with some nice crackling moments, mixing up soul and funk with the unusual sensitivity that made him so great! The best cuts have kind of a "bubbling under" organ sound – in kind of a post-Melting Pot mode that's really nice and mellow – and titles include "Black Side", "Left Overs", "Sugar Cane", "Neck Bone", and "Spare Change". (Cover has a cutout hole with some light stains near the spine.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

An interesting move for Don Covay – a singer who started out as a fairly straightforward soul performer, then got a bit bluesier in the early 70s, then shifted back to a more pop-oriented groove. Columbia, 1978. Very Good
Massive work from the great Cheryl Lynn – and a key bridge between late 70s disco and the newer grooves of the 80s club scene! The album's a mix of midtempo groovers with a few mellower tracks – and it's got a tight, slightly jazzy sound that was very fresh at the time, and which still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chimneyville/Atco, 1973. Near Mint-
An excellent album from King Floyd – possibly his best, and proof that the harder side of southern soul sound was still alive and well in the 70s! The record was one of the first few big ones to come out of the Malaco studios in Jackson – which would soon become one of the biggest hubs ... LP, Vinyl record album
