A near-lost chapter in the Stax Records catalog – and an album recorded by The MGs in the years after Booker left Memphis and the group for the California scene! The album features organist Carson Whitsett at the keys – doing a pretty good job of filling Booker's place – but the real strength of the set comes from drummer Al Jackson – who plays the kit with some nice crackling moments, mixing up soul and funk with the unusual sensitivity that made him so great! The best cuts have kind of a "bubbling under" organ sound – in kind of a post-Melting Pot mode that's really nice and mellow – and titles include "Black Side", "Left Overs", "Sugar Cane", "Neck Bone", and "Spare Change". Atlantic, 1975. Very Good-
The third album from Black Heat – and quite possibly the funkiest of the bunch – thanks to an even tighter sound than before, and lots of emphasis on the bottom of the groove! The group's got a few more members than before, but their sound is somehow even leaner – a really tight ... LP, Vinyl record album

King, 1970. Very Good-
Further genius from James Brown at the start of the 70s – a record that's starting to show some of the more open-ended grooves he'd explore with the JBs on their own albums – longer, stretched-out tracks that are way more than simple funk and soul! There's a sense of freewheeling ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oh Girl
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint-
Wicked electric funk from Young Holt Unlimited – and a real departure from the sound of their 60s albums, and a step into a groove that's very 70s-styled overall! The album's heavy on Fender Rhodes – played not just by group member Ken Chaney, but also by a young Bobby Lyle – ... LP, Vinyl record album
