Rootsy folk and early country music – pulled from a host of pre-war 78s, and served up in one mighty nice package from the folks at Mississippi Records! The set's a real treasure – filled with darkness and a sharp edge that you might not expect from tunes of this vintage – almost bluesy at points, and quite different than some of the overdone tropes of the time! Most numbers are surprisingly clear – done with a crisp style that makes the acoustic instrumentation and spare vocals come through brilliantly – on titles that include "Reuben Oh Reuben" by Emry Arthur, "Louise Collins" by John Hurt, "Adieu False Heart" by Arthur Smith Trio, "Dark Holler Blues" by Clarence Ashley, "Molly Man" by Moses Mason, "Lulu Wall" by Bascom Lamar Lunsford, and "A Short Life Of Trouble" by Buell Kazee.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Mississippi, Late 20s. New Copy
Bluesy material, but all sung in French – and recorded in Louisiana during the 78rpm era by Blind Uncle Gaspard and Delma Lachney! The music here is all from vintage 78s, and is a definite precursor to later cajun sounds – but done at a level that's more acoustic blues styled overall ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1981/1984. New Copy 2LP
A surprisingly strong set of previously unreleased Johnny Cash – recorded with producer Billy Sherrill, mostly in 1984, but with a couple sessions from '81 – and it's honestly as great, and a heck of a lot better than a bunch of Johnny's music that actually DID see commercial release ... Emma Tricca
Bird/Finders Keepers (UK), 2014. New Copy
A contemporary set, but one that would be right at home in the best acid folk years of the British scene! Emma Tricca has this really unique voice – warm, but with a crackle too – which really fits these ancient-sounding lyrics of her folksy tunes – as does the album's light ... LP, Vinyl record album

Haunted Brain
Unheard-Of, 2014. New Copy
Wonderful musings from the haunted brain of Russell Hoke – a timeless album of indie, outsider material – sung and played by Hoke on guitar, banjo, and harmonica – with the same blend of folk and blues as in his 80s recordings! The songs are better-formed here, but still recorded ... LP, Vinyl record album

Starday/Reserve, 1957. New Copy (reissue)
A really early record by a young, fresh-faced George Jones – his full length debut, actually – released in 1957 by Starday, not too long after his debut appearance at the Grand Ole Opry! Move With Love
Country Flavor/Numero, 1976. New Copy (reissue)
An unusual bit of female folk from mid 70s California – not really country, but far from the sound of the LA scene too – a distinction that's probably made even stronger by the small studio recording of the record in San Jose! Kathy Heideman sings straight at some times, but has these ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tightly grooving folk rock from Hunt & Turner – far less hippy dippy than so many groups of the ilk, and focusing an really tight, guitar & melody driven sound!
