One of the greatest jazz soundtracks of all time! Johnny Mandel composed the memorable score for this late 50's film starring Susan Hayward, and the music is played by Mandel's orchestra of west coast players like Jack Sheldon, Bill Holman, Joe Maini, Shelly Manne, and others. The whole thing's a jazz soundtrack lover's delight – and tracks include "Poker Game", "Stakeout", "Trio Convicted", "Death Scene", "The Last Mile", and "Gas Chamber Unveiling". (70s pressing. Shrinkwrap has a hole in one corner. Cover has a cut corner.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Music From Odds Against Tomorrow
United Artists, 1959. Very Good Gatefold
A brilliant album through and through – not just a standout from the late 50s years of the Modern Jazz Quartet, but also a compelling soundtrack composed entirely by pianist John Lewis! Lewis' writing was always a key part of the group's sound, but here it really comes into its own – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Art
United Artists, 1958. Good
A seminal session as a leader by the young Art Farmer – recorded for United Artists, and a great set of tight lyrical tunes, played by Farmer in his sparkling style – in a group along with Benny Golson on tenor and Bill Evans on piano. Evans is a special treat here, as the 1958 session ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paris Blues – Original Soundtrack
United Artists, 1961. Very Good
We've always loved Duke Ellington's soundtracks, and this is one of his best! The score is a moody introspective one, written for a 1961 film that starred Paul Newman as a frustrated jazz musician living in Paris. The "Paris Blues" theme is a dark, somber composition that is supposedly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Proof that the serious compositional intentions of MJQ member John Lewis could more than be fulfilled – and a nice dramatic score that features a few themes that would later be taken up more fully by Lewis' group. The set is mostly orchestral with jazz touches – featuring Lewis at the ... LP, Vinyl record album

This is the small combo recording of tracks from the legendary jazz score to I Want To Live! Although not featured that prominently in the film, the band of Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Bud Shank, and others were a pretty tight little group – even though it was strange to see this west coast ... Nessa, 1977. Very Good+
One of the best albums ever by this legendary Chicago trio – a great example of the way that records on the Nessa label can really get to the heart of artists' intentions! Kind Of Blue
Columbia, 1959. Very Good+
What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington's drummer from the 50's leads a thunderous octet that includes Harry Edison on trumpet, Sam Most on alto, and Jim Cook on tenor. Bellson's drums are out front, and he kicks the group nice and hard through tracks like "Thunderbird", "Nails", "No More ... LP, Vinyl record album
